Syllabus: Brief history of theoretical approaches in the study of disability. Common sense theories x scientific theories; Medical model; Psychopedagogical model; Social model. Contributions of sociological and anthropological approaches to the study of disability; Irving Goffman: stigma theory and symbolic interactionism; Howard Becker: The Theory of Labeling. Chicago School Contributions; Norbert Elias: sociology of power relations; The English School of "Disabilities Studies"; Robert Murphy and the liminality theory; Critical Theory of Disability. Implications of the social approach in current theoretical and political formulations related to the issue of (d)efficiency; The Social Model in the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (CIF, 2003); Theoretical assumptions of Brazilian policy on disability issues: critical analysis of current legal and official documents.
