Program Objectives

In 2020, UFSCar's Graduate Program in Special Education completed 42 years of the master's course and 21 years of the doctoral course. When it was created in 1978, its objectives were defined taking into account that training for scientific research, teaching in higher education and the provision of services in the area of Special Education should be guaranteed. These continue to be the objectives of the course, 42 years after its creation..

The curriculum structure was programmed based on the need to provide students with training to:

  1. University Teaching: which would imply in offering conceptual training and in the skills required by special education, so that the student is able to analyze the variables involved in the teaching-learning process, plan, apply and evaluate teaching procedures and activities.
  2. Research in Special Education: which would imply providing students with foundations of the theory of science and knowledge, principles of scientific methodology, and the history of science that enable them to carry out experimental and descriptive research in the area.
  3. Advising on Special Education programs and services for people with disabilities, pervasive developmental disorders and high abilities/giftedness: which would imply providing knowledge about the peculiarities of Special Education institutions and situations in Brazil, and teaching the student skills for staff training, planning and evaluation of programs and technological resources for specialized educational services.
